Action
Action films are all about excitement, movement, and adventure. They often involve fights, chases, explosions, or daring stunts. The main focus is on physical activity, and the hero usually faces clear obstacles or villains. These films are designed to keep the audience on the edge of their seats, with fast pacing and high energy. Mad Max: Fury Road is a perfect example of an action movie with fast pacing, constant movement, practical stunts and minimal dialogue, basically pure action storytelling.
Thriller
Thrillers focus on suspense, tension, and uncertainty. They make viewers feel anxious or uneasy, often through unexpected twists, dangerous situations, or psychological conflict. The audience is kept guessing about what will happen next. Thrillers can involve crime, espionage, or psychological mind games, and visuals and atmosphere play a big role in building tension. Se7en acts as a prime example, a movie which builds tension, mystery, and psychological pressure with a dark tone and shocking ending.
Horror
Horror films aim to scare or shock the audience. They often use dark settings, sudden scares, monsters, or supernatural elements to create fear. The goal is to make viewers feel uneasy or terrified, sometimes exploring human fears, the unknown, or extreme violence. Suspense, sound design, and visual effects are crucial in making horror effective. For example the Conjuring, classic horror techniques, jump scares, eerie sound design, supernatural threat.
Comedy

The Notebook uses a love-centered narrative with emotional highs/lows and iconic romantic moments.

For example the very popular Interstellar, Science concepts, futuristic setting, space exploration, time dilation, and often comments on real-world issues through imagination. Visual effects, world-building, and speculative ideas are central to the genre.
Fantasy
Fantasy films take the audience to magical, imaginary worlds. They often include mythical creatures, supernatural powers, or epic adventures. The focus is on wonder, imagination, and storytelling that defies the rules of reality. Costumes, set design, and special effects help make these worlds believable e.g. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Magical world-building, mythical creatures, epic quest narrative.
Crime / Mystery
Crime and mystery films focus on solving a puzzle, often involving a crime, theft, or murder. The audience follows clues alongside the characters, trying to figure out what happened. Suspense, twists, and clever plotting keep viewers engaged, while character motives and moral ambiguity add depth. Sherlock Holmes for example with deep investigations, clues, puzzles, and uncovering hidden truths.
